I just realized I haven't posted new stuff in a while, so I'm throwing these out there. I'm taking a character design class with Izzy Medrano online at CGMA, which is great. Fantastic teacher, awesome class. The guy in red is my take on the Cobra villain Zartan, from the G.I. Joe series. I've always really dug that character, and want to take a crack at more of the characters from that universe sometime.

Below that are some of the ideation sketches I did for him. And the steam-punkish looking guy under that is just some random design that I attempted to sketch out. The looser sketches beneath that are the ideation sketches I did to get to that design. I was thinking of making some kind of inventor or mechanic, with the exception of the second sketch from the left, who was more military inspired.

the sci-fiish soldier designs. I'm really digging doing these things. I want to keep doing more sci-fi work, but maybe I'll change it up a bit for the next few things I do. I have been itching to try other genres that I haven't gotten to yet.

I was watching the military channel last week and got inspired to do some gun designs, just for kicks. It was some program about the top ten best "_"....I forget what type of gun, but it was great to watch. So I did some quick thumbnails, built a couple of them in sketchup, and then tried to work them out to what you see here.

I had some time to try out some different things in the last couple of weeks, so I experimented a bit. The female samurai was just me messing around a little bit more with that theme and going for something with a bit more color. The mechs were something that I wanted to get around to for a long time. I haven't really done many mecha designs before, so I wanted to learn and give it a shot. Since doing these types of designs are fairly new to me, I thought I'd start out fairly simple, and rendered 'em out like Japanese anime type of designs. Really fun to try out! I want to do a lot more of these in the future and render them out a bit more.

I do these from photos when I can squeeze 'em in. I spend around 45-60 minutes on them and they're pretty small. And Pat Presley liked looking at this half naked barbarian Arnold. So there you go. I need more practice. I don't really do any paintings like this for work.

I really liked the design of the vehicles in last exile. I never got the chance to watch the show, since it came out while I was in college and was too busy to remember to watch it back then. Does anyone have a copy that I can borrow? Here's an attempt at drawing something like that.

I just made this senseless thing for no reason. I wasn't thinking about anything in particular. I think I wanted to unwind after work one day and this popped out. On another note, I now live up in the Bay Area. I have a great new job and lots of new friends. Concept Design Academy!

Hello out there. Kevin Chen has started up a school called the Concept Design Academy in the Los Angeles area(specifically in Pasadena), to train students in the art of designing for the video game and film industries. For more information please visit www.conceptdesignacad.blogspot.com and conceptdesignacad.com. Kevin has been instrumental in my art education and is a very inspirational teacher. Also teaching is Anthony Francisco, an amazing creature designer. And Charlie Wen and Khang Le will be giving one day workshops that are not to be missed.

Back from the San Diego Comic-Con

I got back from the Comic-Con yesterday and it was an amazingly positive experience for me. The convention was overwhelmingly enormous as usual, with plenty of great artists to meet and talk to, along with some great booths to see. I also want to thank all of the great artists that took the time to look through my portfolio and gave me some positive feedback. Everyone was so nice to me and I greatly appreciate it.
On this post I've included a couple of the black and white versions of some of the work that I did last term for my Don Quixote project.

I painted these on my last semester break, when I was down visiting my family in San Diego. The harbor area is beautiful down there. If you get the chance to go down to the comic-con this month, definately take the time to enjoy the sites and walk around down town. Also, there is a show called "Bodies" at the UTC mall. It's just like the show "Body Worlds" that was in L.A. a couple of years ago. If you haven't seen it, go check that out too. There are tons of great anatomical exhibits to check out. I was just there over this last fourth of July weekend. Also go watch Transformers and Die Hard. So awesome and fun.

And yes, I know the colors look off. I tried painting these with a different method that I learned in vis dev, and I couldn't make the colors look like I wanted them to.
